UPDATED: Hatch peppers, coming to a store near you

(Julia Ewan/The Washington Post)
They’re here, and more are on the way.

For a growing number of devotees, the Hatch chili pepper season now upon us simply can’t come soon enough. Named for Hatch, N.M., where they were first cultivated in the United States, the long, curvy peppers have a mild to medium heat and are firm enough to stuff and grill. Roasting them’s quite popular, which is why many stores that carry them are set up for roasting onsite as well.

President Obama even gave the peppers a nod recently.

Hatch peppers can be refrigerated for up to 5 days; they can be frozen raw or roasted and skinned, for up to 1 year.

Melissa’s Produce began shipping them last Monday. Find the list of Washington area stores where they are available, and, in some cases, where they are being roasted onsite, after the jump.

FRESH MARKET

A roasting and chef’s demo event is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Annapolis store. The peppers should be available at Washington area Fresh Markets through Sept. 17. Each store offers Hatch chili-cheddar bread (bakery dept.) and a Hatch chili dip (deli dept.)
