It’s Thanksgiving! Well, nearly anyway, and this weekend’s going to be a busy one for area farmers markets. You’ll find plenty of holiday staples, including sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, pies and cider. A few vendors will even be selling turkeys for you last-minute types, so arrive early. Happy shopping, and happy cooking.

SPECIAL EVENTS

At Thursday’s FreshFarm Market in Penn Quarter, Thanksgiving food drive to benefit Thrive DC: Bring non-perishable foods, buy fresh foods from market or make a cash donation (that will be used to purchase foods directly from market farmers). Chef Jose Andres and the ThinkFoodGroup will be at the market from 4- 6 p.m., giving away spinach chickpea soup to all who participate in the drive.

At Saturday’s 14th & U Farmers Market, Washington Post Food editor Joe Yonan will demonstrate and serve samples of a dish from his cookbook, “Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One,” and sign copies.

At Saturday’s Falls Church Farmers Market, Star Catering will provide a cooking demonstration as part of the Falls Church Farmers Market Chef Series, 9-11 a.m.

At Saturday’s FreshFarm Market in Silver Spring, Thanksgiving food drive to benefit Shepherd’s Table: Bring non-perishable foods, buy fresh foods from market or make a cash, check or credit card donation.

At Saturday’s H Street NE FreshFarm Market, Thanksgiving food drive to benefit First Church of Christ Holiness: Bring non-perishable foods, buy fresh foods from market or make a cash donation (that will be used to purchase foods directly from market farmers). Chef Nate Anda of Red Apron Butchery will be on hand to give away hot dogs, and market staff will distribute caramel apples and apple cider.

At Sunday’s Bloomingdale Farmers Market, Washington Post Food editor Joe Yonan will demonstrate and serve samples of a dish from his cookbook, “Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One,” and sign copies.
