A French mother actually sent her 3-year-old son, named Jihad, to school wearing a shirt that had words on it that said, “I am a bomb,” and “Born on Sept. 11.”
Bouchra Bagour, 35, was accused by legal authorities of “defending terrorism,” according to france24.com, and is on trial in Avignon in southern France, where she has appeared in court a few times. Her brother is on trial with her because he gave the T-shirt to her son.
On Wednesday, she was reported to have told the court that she knew letting her son go to school with the shirt on was “tactless,” but she said her son was born on Sept. 11, and she wasn’t trying to make a statement about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Prosecutors said they didn’t buy her explanation. “Who can claim that this is not a direct and scandalous reference to terrorism?” prosecutor Olivier Couvignon was quoted by france24.com as telling the court.
If convicted, the two could go to prison for five years and pay a hefty fine.
