Aretha Franklin selects “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” for King Dedication

Aretha Franklin has selected “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” to sing at the dedication of the Rev. Martin L. King, Jr. Memorial later this month.

In an interview with the Associated Press , Franklin recalled that this hymn, by Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey, was one of King’s favorites. When she traveled with her father during the Civil Rights Movement, King often requested the song.

“I’m really looking forward to this moment. It’s going to be another great, great moment in American history and in African American History,” Franklin said. The memorial and statue in honor of King on the National Mall will be dedicated August 28.

At King’s funeral in 1968 Mahalia Jackson sang “Precious Lord.” Franklin sang the song at Mahalia Jackson’s funeral.

It is a stirring song that has been recorded by almost everybody, including Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, Clara Ward, B.B. King and Al Green.
