Cannes lineup announced: Where are the women?

To quote Carolyn Maloney: Where are the women?

Last year, a record total of four women had films in competition; this year that number has reverted to Le Grand Zero. A rushed perusal of today’s press release reveals that Catherine Corsini is the first female name on the list, with her film “Trois Monde” being shown out of competition in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, along with Sylvie Verheyde’s “Confession of a Child of the Century.”

Still, lots of premieres to look forward to, especially from a particularly strong American contingent that will include Lee Daniels (“The Paperboy”), Jeff Nichols (“Mud”), Benh Zeitlin (“Beasts of the Southern Wild,” the big Sundance winner this year) and Wes Anderson, whose comedy “Moonrise Kingdom” will open the festival on May 16.

Woody Allen won’t be on the Croisette with “To Rome With Love” this year, and highly anticipated films by Paul Thomas Anderson and Terrence Malick will be notably absent. But film snobs have plenty to look forward to, including a tushie-tingling, four-and-a-half hour restored cut of Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America.” How does one say “hurts so good” in French?
