Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City, ‘Good Time’: It’s trending, but is it good?

A regular feature in which we assess the quality of a pop song trending online.

The artists: Carly Rae Jepsen, whose omnipresent “Call Me Maybe” currently sits atop the Billboard Hot 100, and Owl City, the nom-du-cloying-synth-pop of Adam Young. Perhaps you’re still trying to scrub his 2009 hit “Fireflies” from your memory?

The song: It’s a bit late to be entering the song of the summer sweepstakes, but Young cannonballs into the pool, anyway. The keyboards are big and squishy. The vocal melodies teeter between cute and annoyingly cute.

It’s trending: After going up on Owl City’s Soundcloud page yesterday, the song has more than 11,000 plays.

But is it good? Not until the 1:24 mark when Jepsen appears with her ineffable charms. She opens her guest verse singing about how she accidentally dropped her phone in the pool — a sly wink to “Call Me Maybe,” maybe?
