Charles Dickens’s 200th birthday: Name your #ModernDickensBooks

Google is celebrating the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens with a special Google Doodle featuring all of the author’s most important characters. But what would those characters — say, Ebeneezer Scrooge or Oliver Twist — be like in the present day?

Certainly, these Hard Times (heh) have a certain Dickensian ring to them. That’s why it hasn’t been difficult for Twitter users to retitle some of Dickens’s most popular novels into suitable adaptations for the modern era.

Tweet your contemporary Dickens picks with the hashtag #ModernDickensBooks, or leave them in the comments here. See some of the best ones after the jump, and be sure to read Jonathan Grossman’s article, “Five myths about Charles Dickens.”
