The Keegan Theatre’s fifteenth anniversary season is, as usual, diverse: This year, audiences will see musicals, Irish theater, plays best-known for their film adaptations, and a Pulitzer Prize-winner.
The latter, “August: Osage County,” will close out the 2011-2012 season for Keegan; Tracy Letts won the Pulitzer for his family drama in 2008. It will be directed by Keegan’s producing artistic director, Mark Rhea.
Keegan will continue its tradition of producing Irish theater with two world-premiere productions: “An Irish Carol,” based on Dickens’ ”A Christmas Carol,” and Rosemary Jenkinson’s “Cuchullain.” Keegan has presented a work by Jenkinson every year for the past two years (Her ”Stella Morgan” didn’t wow Nelson Pressley, but Celia Wren enjoyed “Basra Boy”).
Two of the plays in Keegan’s season have twice been adapted for film. “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller, will hit the stage in time for Halloween. Its most recent film adaptation starred Winona Ryder. “12 Angry Men,” by Reginald Rose, was first made into a 1957 film starring Henry Fonda, and was remade in 1997. Currently on Keegan’s stage is another stage-to-film favorite, “Steel Magnolias,” which Wren quipped was “low in energy — like a hair dryer running during a brownout.”
