Kennedy Center Honors Watch: Yo-Yo Ma

Yo-Yo Ma, the famed cellist and a 2011 Kennedy Center Honoree, is out on the hustings, just like everyone else, promoting his new CD. And even Ma, a recognizable artist everywhere in the world, might expand his audience with this recording.

Ma joined three bluegrass artists, acclaimed in their field for their innovations and interpretations of this American music. “The Goat Rodeo Sessions,” released this week, brought together Ma with Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. Thile is a master mandolin player; Duncan plays fiddle and Meyer the bass. This is the third project for Meyer and Ma.

Tuesday night the quartet will introduce their collaboration on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and in the next few days will appear on “Fox & Friends Weekend” and “The Colbert Report.” President Obama is also slated for Tuesday’s “Tonight Show.”

Ma will be honored by the Kennedy Center in December, along with Sonny Rollins, Barbara Cook, Meryl Streep and Neil Diamond.
