Melody Records’ closing playlist

Customers take advantage of the sales at Melody Records, a small business that closed after 34 years in Dupont Circle. (Marvin Joseph)
Melody Records, the beloved family-owned Dupont business, is closing its doors after 34 years. We asked the Melody staff to send along their favorite artists to play in the store and, as we expected, we got plenty of unexpected picks.. It’s the perfect eclectic mix of music you didn’t know you liked yet. And it’s that personal recommendation we will miss the most when the doors shut at Melody.

“Just because Pandora recommends something doesn’t mean it’s cool,” Glenn Peoples, senior editorial analyst at Billboard, said. “To know what’s cool and what people are excited about, you’ve got to go to a record store.”

The store does not have a definite closing date, but once the inventory goes, so goes the shop.

Check out the playlist below, and leave us your Melody memories in the comments. Want to take the talk to Twitter? Tweet @jessicagolds with the hashtag #MelodyRecords.
