Strathmore calls all ukulele players for Guinness record

The Strathmore Music Center has set its sights on breaking the Guinness World Record for Largest Ukulele Ensemble and is recruiting all players for an evening of strumming on August 24.

Right now the Guinness record stands at 851 ukulele players performing at the same time, set in London in 2009.

Strathmore has declared game-on!

Anyone with a uke can show up at 7 p.m. for what is the center’s last free outdoor concert of the summer. It doesn’t matter the age of the player because right now both the youngsters of the Piney Branch Kids Ukulele Ensemble and folks of a certain age from the Riderwood Retirement Community are practicing.

UkeFest 2011 is going to include some ringers, including the popular pros - The Sweater Set, Victoria Vox , Gerald Ross and the Washington Ukulele Orchestra. Washington’s local favorites and Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer will emcee the evening.

If you don’t have a uke and want to participate, the instruments will be on sale at the event. Also there are ticketed workshops the night before to improve playing skills.
