These days, there seems to be as many people who despise Valentine’s Day as there are starry-eyed lovers armed with chocolate and flowers. This is for good reason — Valentine’s Day misses the fact that more than one in four adults in the U.S. never marry.
As happy as the single life may be for some, few escape the pain of a broken heart at some point in a lifetime. And all the cheery red and white cupcakes of the season serve as a bittersweet reminder. That’s why this time of year is the best time to blast the anti-love song — those songs that describe love for the devastating, torturous affair it can be.
My go-to anti-Valentine’s Day song will always be Ludo’s “Love Me Dead,” a rock ballad that epitomizes a lover’s angst with clever lyrics and impassioned cries. I once sent the song to a now-ex, and with lines like “Love me cancerously/like a salt-sore soaked in the sea,” it was clear that love’s ship had sailed.
