The bison are gone but the Smithsonian is still around after 165 years

When the Smithsonian Institution brags that it has educated and entertained generations of Americans, it is not kidding. Wednesday marks the 165th anniversary of the Smithsonian.

Once just the Castle Building, the Smithsonian now lines both sides of the National Mall with eight major museums, the Castle and the Arts and Industries Building, now undergoing renovation.

To mark the occasion, the Smithsonian released this picture of the olden days when bison and other animals were part of the sights on the Mall.
