Tony Awards: Full list of 2012 nominees includes ‘Follies,’ ‘Once,’ ‘Porgy and Bess’

The musical “Follies” and the play “Clybourne Park” — both of which started their runs in Washington — are among this year’s Tony Award nominees, announced Tuesday morning by the American Theatre Wing.

Follies,” which moved to Broadway after opening at the Kennedy Center, was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, along with “Evita,” “Porgy and Bess” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein were among the actors in “Follies” who were nominated for their roles.

Clybourne Park,” the Pulitzer-winning play about race and real estate, was nominated for best play, along with “Other Desert Cities,” “Peter and the Starcatcher” and “Venus in Fur.” “Clybourne Park” got its start at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington.

Washington got another nod from the Tony nominations this year: The Shakespeare Theatre was selected to receive the regional Tony Award, given to a theater outside of Broadway that demonstrates excellence. The Shakespeare Theatre is the third Washington area theater to receive this honor, after Arena Stage in 1976 and Signature Theatre in 2009.
