Woody Guthrie’s timeless songs

Woody Guthrie would have turned 100 this Saturday and his centennial year is being celebrated worldwide with concerts, panels, theater productions and CD releases. A full listing of Woody Guthrie centennial events can be found at www.woody100.com.

One of the more astounding aspects of Guthrie’s life was his sheer productivity. From the mid-1930 to the late 1940s he wrote thousands of songs, from political broadsides and civil rights anthems to wonderfully silly children’s songs. The Spotify list below offers a glimpse into his vast repertoire.

Guthrie never managed to record a good number of the songs he wrote, but many have found a new life in recordings done by others. The list of performers who have sung Guthrie’s songs over the years is impressive but there have also been some unexpected covers over the years. Here are five that we didn’t expect to find (especially Bob Dylan singing “Car, Car.”)

Listen to our Woody Guthrie playlist below (you’ll need a Spotify login, which is free) and share your favorites in the comments.
