How to submit an announcement or event for publication

How do I request an obituary or submit a death notice?

The Post writes news obituaries about individuals who lived in the Washington area for a large part of their lives — generally at least 20 uninterrupted years. Obituary subjects also will have had substantial involvement in their communities through employment or membership in religious, civic or other organizations. News obituaries do not include funeral or memorial information and cannot be published more than a month after a person’s death. As these are considered news articles, there is no charge.

To request a news obituary, please use our online form. After submitting, please call the obituaries department at 202.334.6477 to confirm receipt and arrange for an interview. A family member must be able to provide information about the medical cause of death and other pertinent facts regarding the person’s career, community involvement, marriages and survivors.

News obituaries are distinct from paid death notices. A paid death notice is a classified advertisement that usually includes funeral or memorial information. Costs vary according to the length of a death notice and whether a photograph is desired. Death notices can be placed by calling the Classified Advertising department at 202.334.4122 or e-mailing deathnotices@washpost.com.

How do I let The Post know about a wedding?

If you’d like your wedding to be considered for coverage in the On Love section of the newspaper or Web site, please use our form to submit your wedding story.

For paid announcements of weddings, engagements, anniversaries, birthdays or other events, e-mail weddings@washpost.com or call 202.334.5736.

How do I submit events for the Going Out Guide?

Send listing information about concerts, dance performances, festivals, literary events, plays and happy hours to events@washingtonpost.com. Along with a description, please include the name of the event, the name and address of the location where it will take place, the dates and times it will take place, the price of admission, a phone number for members of the public to call with questions, any relevant website address, and either a phone number or e-mail contact for use by Post staff.

How do I submit business events or announcements?

Business events and announcements are listed in Monday’s Capital Business publication. To send information about an event, e-mail facetime@washpost.com. To submit hiring or promotion announcements for Washington-area staffers, e-mail appointments@washpost.com.

How do I submit religious events?

Retirements, new appointments, ordainments, awards and upcoming religious events are listed on Saturday’s On Faith page. At least two weeks before the event, you may send information, including the name and telephone number of a contact person, to the religion editor at rpevents@washpost.com.
