Judging McDonnell’s actions

July 10, 2013

Lots of reader comments today about Rosalind S. Helderman’s article saying that a prominent political donor last year gave $70,000 to a corporation owned by Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his sister and that the governor did not disclose the money as a gift or loan.

The donor, Jonnie R. Williams Sr., had previously given a $50,000 check to the governor’s wife, Maureen. In total, Williams gave $145,000 to the Williams family in 2011 and 2012.  The funds are at the center of federal and state investigations.

Williams is the chief executive of the dietary supplement manufacturer Star Scientific Inc.

We’ll start with Zambezi, who wrote, “This is not worthy of the office held by Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe.”

But mben blamed the bearer of the news, writing that “One can only imagine what would happen in this country if the lying Liberal media was a Conservative media. We’d see a power shift away from Liberals who destroy the economy and we’d probably see about 20 million jobs created (remember Pres.Regan?) and the American ppl could finally go back to work, get off food stamps and support their families!”

To which slimething replied,I don’t remember President Regan. Remember Spelling Class? BTW, your post is irrelevant to the story.”

pam8 said, “So do I have this right? It’s not okay to have Planned Parenthood taking any money because one part of the organization, completely separate from the rest, helps pay for abortions but the VA governor’s “family” can receive gifts, including money, from anyone and not report it? I guess whoever wrote this VA law didn’t have a good relationship with the rest of his family so he never figured that money to a family member could make it to the governor.”

Grapenehi said, “Iran Contra. Union busting. Etc. I remember a lot of folks making and buying then new personal computers. I don’t think the Prez had much to do with that little influx of capital into the economy.”

jvanm2001 suggested, “I’d give the McDonnells the benefit of doubt and accept they might just be members of the misguided wealthy who feel self-righteous and entitled — but Maureen’s (paraphrasing here) — “That Rolex sure would look nice on Bob’s wrist — you say you want a meeting with state officials about your products?” — is worthy of a mob wife.

vdavis213 wrote, “No laws broken, no ethics violation. Just pure and simple poor judgment that leaves the door open for possible wrong doing that no one can prove or disprove. Time to get out.”

TomMiller1 asked, “Are actions like this commonplace for public servants? Do the rest of us just live in a vacuum blinded by our own partisanship and refuse to see the truth? I actually voted for this guy because he seemed moderate and could break the chain of 1-party control over the Governorship in Virginia… But voting for McDonnell and his family has been a major disappointment to say the least. They appear to be nothing less than common criminals completely oblivious to their responsibilities as “public servants”

To which mben replied, “time to take your meds. McDonnell was very successful for the state of Va.”

And TomMiller1 added, “And apparently for himself and his family as well.”

Zzishate said, “Not all politicians are thieves. Keep the faith.”

angrycrat1 wrote, “Mitt Romney dodged a bullet by not putting McDonnell on the ticket. America dodged a bullet by not electing Mitt Romney.”

sanfordflg said, “I think that the most ironic thing that could happen is for Star Science to pay for McDonnell’s lawyers. Wouldn’t that be a hoot?”

jswarren opined, “And so it ends for a former rising star and future Prez hopeful from the GOP.”

Bayricker said, “WPost, you have yet to demonstrate even one instance of wrongdoing in this weekly smear series on McDonnell. If he’s broken any laws, regulations or rules then that would be news. So far it appears he’s abiding by all the laws and reporting requirements that he’s supposed to observe.

mben wrote, “WaPo uses the word ‘alleged’ to smear Republicans.”

To which zzishate replied, “mben: ‘Alleged’ is a legal term. Since he hasn’t been convicted of anything, the usage is proper. What word should be used?”

Anegroid said, “I’m as Republican as they come, but he is a criminal and needs to go…..to jail.”

Mben asked, “Anegroid, its all “alleged” and that doesnt bother you ?????????”

To which Anegroid answered, “A pattern adds to more than alleged. One clue proves nothing, multiple clues indicate crime may be afoot.”

We’ll close with tombukowski, who said, “The Right will blame the reporting of this, not the Govenor for doing it.”
