Freed from the constraints of determining “value,” I have no problem taking a closer with 70-something innings over a position player with 600-something plate appearances for ROY, when the performance is as brilliant as Kimbrel’s this year. This was an historic season, sullied only slightly by the two homers he gave up in critical games this week. We’re talking (as of this writing) 45 saves, a 2.03 ERA and a .176 opponents’ batting average. Freeman was my preseason pick, and in most other years his 20-homer, .803-OPS season might have done the trick. But not this year.
