Although it’s hard to believe that anyone could top Adele’s sultry, sorrowful performance of “Someone Like You” at the Video Music Awards last night, hundreds have already tried.
If anything, the number of cover recordings may have something with the universality of the dark ballad, which talks about coming to terms with love lost.
Adele, who wrote the song on her acoustic guitar after the end of an 18- month-relationship with a man she thought she would marry, has said of the song, “I wrote that song on the end of my bed. I had a cold. I was waiting for my bath to run. I’d found out that he’d got engaged.”
