In typical curmudgeon fashion, Rooney, 92, told viewers in a final message that if they saw him out and about to leave him alone. ”Please, just let me eat my dinner,” he said.

But Rooney also said that leaving the show was the moment he had always dreaded.

“I wish I could do this forever. But I can’t,” he said. “But I’m not retiring. Writers don’t retire, and I'll always be a writer.”
