New Zealand oil spill becomes country’s worst maritime disaster

For nearly a week, a Liberia-flagged container ship has been leaking fuel just off the coast of New Zealand. This is not a small garage-floor-staining leak. This is hundreds of tons of oil pouring into the ocean waters in the Astrolabe Reef, flooding the beach with thick oil clumps, and drenching wildlife in fuel.

The boat crashed during calm weather for unknown reasons, and the ship’s owners Greece-based Costamare Inc gave no explanation for the grounding. However, the weather has since taken a turn for the worse, blocking all repair crews from stopping the spill, the Associated Press reports.
