On opposite sides of the country Thursday, shooting deaths occurred at or near Occupy protest encampments. In Burlington, Vt., on the afternoon before Veteran’s Day, a military veteran died of a gunshot wound in what police uspsect was a suicide. In Oakland, Calif., a man was shot and killed outside a restaurant frequented by the protesters.
In the Burlington incident, the police declared the encampment a crime scene and blocked protesters from reentering. It was a tragic turn from the previous day’s festive atmosphere, when musician Gogol Bordello played acoustic music for the group.
In Oakland, the shooting victim was apprently not connected to the protests. But according to the Occupy Oakland Web site, medics from the camp were the first to arrive on the scene. The death has heightened tensions in the encampment that has seen the most violent protests in the Occupy movement.
