This phrase has been floating around since yesterday (Wikipedia, of course, had it up Wednesday night), but I had not heard it so far. According to Jake Tapper’s ABC blog, the code name of the action against Osama bin Laden was Operation Neptune Spear. Didn’t Neptune wield a trident? I’d like to see an extensive interview with the person who picks code names.
Update: Alex Blackwell (thank you!) points out that if I really want to splice details, technically the trident is a spear. The trident also happens to be on the Navy SEAL insignia. Which makes total sense. There would be a hat tip to the sea god when you’re the section of the military tasked with patrolling the ocean.
