Two deadly earthquakes struck Lorca, Spain, Wednesday killing at least eight people, injuring dozens and sending thousands into the streets. The quakes, with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2, were the worst to hit Spain in 50 years. Despite the low magnitude, the quakes occurred close to the surface, “which magnified their energy and destructive power,” the Associated Press reports. There were also older buildings in the town that were vulnerable to quake damage.
