USC student writes, records graduation song

Hasn’t it been a while since we got a new graduation song? Seriously: Green Day’s “Time of Your Life” is getting old. So, here’s a suggestion for your graduation playlist.

The University of Southern California commissioned senior Derik Nelson to write an original song for this year’s commencement. Nelson came up with “Take Chances,” a song that encourages graduates to change the world (even if that means not making money) and continue learning.

Then he recorded a music video on campus with USC music school alumni:

(Hopefully, USC grads noticed that the Trojan battle cry — Fight on! — made it into the song’s refrain. And that rooftop scene? It was filmed on a helipad overlooking campus.)

What other songs are on your Class of 2011 playlist? Tell me in the comments section.
