NII Holdings to reduce staff at headquarters by 20 percent

NII Holdings plans to terminate or relocate 20 percent of the workforce at its Reston headquarters, the firm announced Tuesday, as part of a strategic realignment that executives said will help the company grow.

NII Holdings sells Nextel mobile phones and communications services throughout Latin America. Executives said some of the positions will move there, while others will simply be eliminated.

The company did not respond to a request for comment. It has previously said it had 330 people based in the Washington area.

“These actions will provide us with the right structure to capture the growth, scale, and accountability required to succeed in our markets and achieve our long-term growth objectives,” Steve Dussek, NII Holdings’ chief executive, said in a statement.

The company expects to incur a one-time expense of about $8 million in the fourth quarter as a result of the reductions.

NII has sought to expand its mobile networks and bulk up on spectrum in Latin America in recent years as more people there purchase data-consuming smartphones. The company operates in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Chile.
