Want to go tornado chasing? Sorry -- you won't find any twisters in the D.C. area this weekend. You can, however, live vicariously through Capital Weather Gang columnist Andrew Freedman, who has gone west in search of the supercell storms that form tornadoes.

Andrew is embedded with a team of tornado researchers chasing storms in the Great Plains as part of VORTEX2, a tornado research project funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The researchers hope to learn more about how, when and why tornadoes form; the structure of tornadoes; and how to better forecast them.

Follow Andrew's adventures on our Twitter feed -- http://twitter.com/capitalweather -- for tweets like these:

approaching storm showing signs of rotation in Wyoming. Doppler radars deploying.

What happens when a half dozen doppler radar trucks roll into a gas station? The gas station attendant gives out free snickers!

Andrew plans to continue chasing through Wednesday June 10.
