FORECAST IN DETAIL

Pretty quiet weather for the next two days as we finally struggle back up to more normal temperatures. Saturday is tricky as a cold high up in New England could push us back below normal and up our cloud cover. Despair not for Sunday is finally firmly in the warm column and Monday threatens to push close to the record high of 70 at Reagan. Hooky anyone?

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Today (Thursday): The sun is out in full force but closing in on its lowest angle of the season. That makes warming this stubbornly cold airmass a challenge. A few clouds may pop up in the afternoon. Winds are only 5-10 mph from the southwest. Highs should top out in the mid-to-upper 40s. Confidence: High

Tonight: Clear skies and calming winds mean fast dropping temperatures. Lows should range from mid-20s outlying suburbs to lower 30s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): Another mainly sunny day with just a few streaks of high level clouds. For a change we get up to normal with highs in the lower 50s. Breezes are hardly noticeable to boot so standing in the sun should be almost pleasant. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: The winds shift to come from the east during the night and this could lead to some low level clouds especially late at night. Lows should range through the 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday should be even warmer but a high over New England is likely to push some cooler air our way. If all works out it should be a draw and we still get normal highs in the lower 50s. However, if the push is just a little stronger we could end up with stubborn clouds and chillier conditions. By evening, skies should have cleared in any event and overnight lows are expected to reach the upper 30s to lower 40s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday dawns milder with winds picking up from the south. Pre-dawn risers look east to be treated to a planetary column with Saturn on top, Venus in the middle and faint Mercury near the horizon on bottom. Clear skies give way to partly cloudy skies late in the day. Highs jump up to the upper 50s to lower 60s. There is a slight risk, 20%, of a shower overnight but it should be late and light. Lows hold in the 40s. Confidence: Medium

Monday is a real winner with highs in the 60s under mostly sunny skies. Definitely look for an outdoor errand! Confidence: Medium
