FORECAST IN DETAIL

Muggy air exists along with more shower and storm chances through early weekend, but if we’re lucky change arrives by Sunday. Is it the last gasp of true summer swelter? It hopefully should end the unique weather forecasting challenges lately, as we enter a more predictable, stable regime by the workweek. Comfortable air alert! It’s looking pretty sweet. So be ready to enjoy next week, for sure.

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Today (Friday): Sunshine amounts should increase through the day, as that palpable mugginess actually decreases just a bit. Light but noticeable breezes, generally out of the south, may actually make it feel decently comfortable. Temperatures still get very warm, into the upper 80s to lower 90s during the afternoon, depending on just how much sunshine we see. It should be mainly or fully dry but humid and hot days sometimes bubble up an isolated storm. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Skies are clearer during the early part of the evening and nighttime hours, but a fair number of clouds may roll over the region in the hours before sunrise. Low temperatures hold in the low-to-mid 70s, but a couple spots outside the beltway could dip below 70 briefly. A light southerly breeze may continue to help make it feel a bit more comfortable. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): I foresee fleeting sunshine, noticeable humidity, and warm temperatures in the mid-80s to near 90. Southerly breezes pick up into more moderate winds, certainly stronger than Friday. We can thank our approaching, and fairly strong, cold front that is coming in from the west. A few showers could pop in the morning (10-20% chance) but really it should be the more abundant afternoon clouds that, in tandem, raise shower/storm chances toward the likely range (70% or so) at some point by the late afternoon. Note that there could be a few strong storms as the cold front gets closer late in the day, so check back with us if you can. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: The clouds and storms may persist or mainly happen during the evening, especially before midnight, so rain remains likely at least early. Low temperatures in the 60-66 degree range (suburbs-city) are also a good bet. Somewhat refreshing, yes? Just wait. Northwesterly winds may start to kick up too, as the cold front passes. That should really help you realize a new air mass is filtering into the region! Confidence: Medium-High

Sunday: This one may prove to be a refreshing, somewhat sunny day. Race-day morning should be alright for you early triathlon folks. But so far, I can’t rule out all the uncertainty as to whether or not our cold front continues to push offshore fully, or not (thank Hurricane Leslie in the middle of the Atlantic blocking things up!). Shower chances fluctuate in at least the 30% range as it appears now, with more clearing probable in the afternoon. But, clouds and showers could dampen the day, and the temperatures, more than we currently expect. So I have to cast a wide net when looking at temperatures. High temperatures could be anywhere from the mid-70s (rainier) to low 80s (sunshine). Confidence: Low-Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Sunday night: As the evening turns into nighttime hours, we should fully clear out, and low temperatures slowly drop into a comfortably cool range -- upper 50s to lower 60s. Confidence: Medium

Monday is the new Sunday? Chances of a clearer, bright day are high as we start the workweek. It’s even possible we might issue a nice day sunshine stamp if it keeps looking like this! High temperatures are wonderful as of right now, in the upper 70s to around 80. Confidence: Medium

Tuesday may be even better than Monday, as in totally clear, but with similar high temperatures to enjoy in the upper 70s to low 80s. Time for sunscreen again! Confidence: Medium
