Folks, this is what we call weather whiplash. What else would you call freezing rain Monday morning, highs near 70 yesterday and likely today as well, a gusty cold front tonight with a chance of thunder, and back to windy 40s tomorrow? As we settle back into a more typical winter routine Thursday night into this weekend, we’ll be watching two chances for snowflakes, though neither looks like a big deal.
Today (Wednesday): Warm air wins again. For the second straight day highs should surge to near 70, on the strength of a mild breeze from the south around 15-20 mph. Partly to mostly cloudy skies could yield an afternoon shower (20-30% chance), but odds are we stay mostly dry until tonight. So enjoy the day because winter is back tomorrow. Confidence: Medium-High
Tonight: The evening starts mild as a cold front closes in. Shower chances hold around 30% through early evening. We should then see a band of potentially heavy showers and possibly some thunder move through from west to east between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. A few of the heavier showers might be capable of damaging wind gusts, but a widespread severe outbreak is not expected. Temperatures start to tumble behind the front, cooling down to the 40s toward sunrise. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): It’s a windy and much colder day - more like, well, winter. Winds blow from the west near 20-25 mph with some gusts in the 30-40 mph range. Early-morning clouds give way to partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures mainly steady in the 40s. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow night: Winds ease during the evening and overnight. A weak disturbance may try to spark some flurries or light snow overnight or toward morning. As of now doesn’t look like enough to accumulate, but we’ll watch it. Lows drop to the mid-20s to low 30s. Confidence: MediumA LOOK AHEAD
The chance of flurries or light snow continues Friday morning. Again, as of now the system appears too weak for accumulation, but we’ll keep our eye on it. Otherwise, we’re looking at a cold and breezy day with skies turing partly sunny and highs only in the 30s. Mostly clear and quite cold Friday night with lows in the teens across many of the burbs and low-to-mid 20s downtown. Confidence: Medium
The weekend stays on the cold side with Saturday highs in the upper 30s to low 40s, Saturday night lows in the mid-20s to near 30, and Sunday highs mainly in the 40s. Another weak disturbance attempts to generate flurries or light snow late Saturday into early Sunday, but again accumulation potential seems limited. Confidence: Low-Medium
