FORECAST IN DETAIL

Who fired up the afterburners on this weather? The weekend has the classic summer three ‘H’s: hell, horrible and hike up the A/C! The chance for records to tumble could come most any day starting tomorrow and continuing through Monday. And, as if that weren’t bad enough, a “leap second” is planned Saturday evening so we have to suffer through an additional second of this..

Today (Thursday): Barely a cloud in the sky on this day as the humidity is slow to ratchet up. That allows the sun to bear down uninterrupted and our baked soils to pump up the heat. Breezes are light but appreciated. Highs are firmly in the mid-90s. Confidence: High

Tonight: You can almost feel the humidity rising this evening with readings hanging in the 80s. A disturbance well to our north could kick off a few thunderstorms in the pre-dawn. The chance of rain is 20-30%. Lows should end up in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Friday): Sunshine is mixed with a few clouds in the early morning. But those likely fade before another batch is set to bubble up in the heat of the afternoon. Humidity is back in full force and breezes are just barely enough to be noticed. Temperatures climb rapidly with highs topping out in the upper 90s to lower 100s and heat indices 5-10 degrees higher. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: A few of the thunderstorms that pop up over the Blue Ridge in the late afternoon could sneak into the area in the evening (40% chance). Any storms are likely to disappear by midnight. Evening readings sizzle in the mid-to-upper 80s unless you get a thundershower. Lows end up in the lower 70s in rain spots and upper 70s in the have nots. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday is a good time to contemplate an Alaskan vacation. Temperatures race upwards under morning sun. However, the humidity spawns plenty of clouds and a little upper air lift could arrive just in time to kick off a batch of late day thunderstorms across the area. Odds you see rain are 30-40%.. Highs should still make the mid-to-upper 90s before the storms do their best to cut heating short. Evening readings slowly fall through the 80s with overnight lows in the 70s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday looks like a repeat performance of Saturday. Hot, humid, 30-40% chance of afternoon thunderstorms and highs in the mid-to-upper 90s. The evening clears up late with 80s again giving way to overnight lows in the 70s. Confidence: Medium

Monday is another day of heat and humidity to add to our string that is accumulating faster than I would like. However a few more clouds and a 40% chance of thunderstorms could hold highs in the low-to-mid 90s. Confidence: Medium
