FORECAST IN DETAIL

We’re staring down day 20 of 90-degree or higher temperatures in this scorching July, so hopefully we can appreciate the cooler heat that’s taking over in the coming period. Storm chances are around off and on as well, with seemingly a better chance today compared to tomorrow, but no real washouts anywhere to be seen for now. The dog days last a while longer, but it could be worse, as we know all too well.

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Today (Saturday): We’ve got a mix of sun and clouds on tap for today, perhaps more clouds than sun at times. Much of the day should be dry, but we’ve got to watch the afternoon and evening for some isolated to scattered storms (30-40% chance). Coverage is a bit in question, but some storms and potential for heavy rain might be roaming late in the day. With extra clouds we rise to highs near 90, but enough sun might nudge us back toward the mid-90s. Confidence: Medium-High

What is the Storm Threat Level?

Tonight: Isolated to scattered showers and t’storms remain a possibility through the evening, likely tapering prior to midnight, if they’re around prior to that point. Afterwards, it’s partly to mostly clear with lows ranging from the upper 60s to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Sunday): We should see a good deal of sun, with only moderate humidity levels to worry about. Another day to find a pool or beach, if you can! I think rain odds are lower than today, with just an outside risk (20% chance) of a late day storm. Highs should rise to near 90. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: After a slight risk of an evening storm, skies are partly to mostly clear. Lows reach the upper 60s to low 70s. Pretty tranquil overall. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Monday features more of the same generally -- actually fairly typical of this time of summer around here. Partly cloudy skies fill with bubbling clouds as the day goes on, and we run into a 30%-40% chance of afternoon or evening showers and storms. Looks like highs again rise to near 90. Confidence: Medium

Tuesday might bring more clouds and rain chances, and that could help keep temperatures down a smidge. We’re talking mid-to-upper 80s if so. If not, right around 90 again. We could all still use the rain, even spots which have seen downpours in recent times, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed a 40-50% chance really delivers. Confidence: Low-Medium
