FORECAST IN DETAIL

October is here and the air has that feel this morning. But a warm front moving through the region Tuesday - complemented by showers - will return temperatures closer to early-to-mid September norms for much of the work week. Cooler air knocks on the door over the weekend.

Today (Monday): A crisp start - with many of us in the 40s. Some patchy fog is possible, but sunshine readily burns any off. During the afternoon, clouds increase, lower and thicken with a 20-40 percent chance of showers, with the highest odds south of the District. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Moist, southerly flow gives us shower chances overnight, but they’re intermittent and scattered. The chance of measurable rain is around 60 percent. Clouds and winds from the south hold overnight lows from the mid-50s to near 60 (downtown). Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Showers are a decent bet (60 percent chance) as the warm front pushes through. During the afternoon, a few of the showers may be locally heavy with some thunder possible as well. But I imagine we’ll have dry intervals with partial sunshine too. With enough sun, we could hit 80 - but I think most of us max out in the mid-to-upper 70s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: The shower potential continues, especially through 8-10 p.m. or so, before coverage gradually decreases. It’s very mild, with lows only 65-70 with flow from the south driving tropical air northward. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

A weak - emphasis on weak - front pushes through the region early, giving us a slight chance of morning showers. For the bulk of the Wednesday, partly to mostly sunny skies are more likely with very mild highs into the low 80s possible. Partly cloudy Wednesday night, with lows from the 54-62 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Medium

Thursday and Friday look terrific, with weak high pressure to our south bringing partly sunny skies and mild temperatures. Highs both days range from 75-80, with lows from 50-59 (suburbs-city) Confidence: Medium

At some point over the weekend (or even as early as late Friday), a strong cold front will press through the region, bringing much cooler air and the chance of a few showers. The timing is in question, however. Right now, Saturday looks to be the warmer of the two days, with highs into the 70s. It likely turns cooler Saturday night with a slight chance of showers and lows in the 40s to near 50. By Sunday, highs may only be in the 60s with a gusty breeze. Check back for updates, as slight changes in the front’s timing will impact weekend forecast details. Confidence: Low-Medium
