FORECAST IN DETAIL

November was decidedly colder than normal, but cold air is scarce for December's first full week. In fact, we start the week with temperatures 10-20 degrees above normal before returning closer to average by Thursday. Any precipitation we see is rain, with chances highest early Wednesday and Saturday.

Today (Monday): A little patchy fog is possible early with temps in the 40s for most when you get up and head out. Then we have partly sunny skies the remainder of the day. It’s pleasantly mild, with highs in the mid-60s. In central Virginia, 70 degree highs are possible. Winds are light. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly cloudy and mild for the season.Lows range from the mid-to-upper 40s in the cooler suburbs to the low 50s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): The best day of the week - good enough to earn a rare and coveted “Nice Day” stamp designation in December. With a light breeze from the south and partly sunny skies, temps reach the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Clouds increase as a cold front approaches. There’s a slight chance (30 percent) of showers by morning with very mild lows from 49-54 (suburbs-city). Winds are from the south at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday brings a slight chance of morning showers as a cold front departs. It becomes partly sunny in the afternoon with highs from 54-58. Winds are from the northwest at 10-15 mph. Becoming clear and colder Wednesday night, with lows 29-35 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Medium

Thursday and Friday are partly to mostly sunny and seasonably cool as high pressure builds over the region. Highs both days are in the upper 40s to low 50s with lows in the upper 20s to mid-30s (downtown). Confidence: Medium

Weekend forecast details are a bit uncertain (subject to the timing of weather systems), but a wave of low pressure may pass through the region Saturday offering a chance of rain, with highs near 50. Partial clearing Saturday night with lows in the mid-30s to low 40s (downtown). On Sunday, we may be in between weather systems with partly sunny skies (possible increasing clouds late) and highs around 50. Confidence: Low
