FORECAST IN DETAIL

Mother Nature comes through in the clutch today with nearly ideal pre-Thanksgiving weather not just here in the D.C. area, but for the vast majority of the country with the exception of the stormy Pacific Northwest. Locally, the story is much the same for Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday as temperatures remain rather mild. No storm threats this weekend, but it does turn windy and much colder.

Today (Wednesday): Terrific travel weather today in the D.C. area and for much of the nation. In fact, virtually the entire eastern two-thirds of the U.S. should be rain-free today. Locally we’re looking at partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-to-upper 50s with breezes around 10 mph from the north. Confidence: High

Tonight: Average lows are now in the low 30s in the suburbs and upper 30s downtown, and that’s pretty much where we should see lows end up tonight under mostly clear skies. Though it’s possible downtown only gets down to near 40. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thanksgiving): This is as good as it gets for Thanksgiving weather, folks. With high pressure firmly in control, mostly sunny skies lift afternoon highs to the upper 50s. Light winds should do little to interfere with your dramatic, game-winning touchdown pass out in the backyard or nearby field. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Worry-free weather continues with mostly clear skies, light winds and lows in the 30s to near 40. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

As a cold front approaches from the west on Black Friday, partly sunny skies and light winds from the southwest ahead of the front warm us up even more. Highs probably top out near 60 or in the low 60s, with a 20% chance of a light evening shower as the front comes through. The cold air hangs back behind the front a bit, so Friday night lows aren’t too low - in the mid-30s to near 40. Confidence: Medium-High

A much colder air mass moves in for the weekend. Despite partly sunny skies, highs are most likely limited to the 40s to near 50. And it may be quite windy Saturday (sustained winds 20 mph, with gusts over 30 possible) when we also can’t rule out a passing flurry or snow shower. The combination of wind and cold may be jarring. Saturday night lows are colder as well, mainly in the upper 20s to low 30s (suburbs to city). Winds diminish some Sunday. Confidence: Medium
