FORECAST IN DETAIL

Mother Nature is turning on the spigots to keep September rains on track, and she is working very efficiently this time. Unfortunately, the rains may accompany severe storms this afternoon or early evening (stay tuned for updates). Although his muggy air mass is not welcome, we clear it out by late tonight to make for a much better day tomorrow. The balance of the week into the weekend is mostly dry and cool, but we may have some showers again by Sunday.

Today (Tuesday): A strong surge of southern soupiness dominates our weather today with high humidity (dew points in the 70s), mostly cloudy skies, frequent showers, gusty winds, and maybe some thunderstorms that could be heavy or severe. Damaging winds, very heavy rains, and isolated tornadoes are possibilities. If it’s cloudy and remains damp through the morning, the risk of severe weather will be less in the afternoon Keep an ear or eye out for any watches or warnings. Highs range from the upper 70s to low 80s. Winds are from the south at 10-20 mph, gusting to 30 mph or so, and potentially subtantially higher in thunderstorms. Confidence: Medium-High

What is the Storm Threat Level?

Tonight: Some evening storms possible, followed by lingering showers into the overnight before some clearing late. Total rainfall from this system (including last night) averages 0.75-1.25”. Lows drop down into the upper 50s or low 60s in most areas. Winds from the west and northwest at 10-15 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly sunny and very comfortable as highs puch only into the low-mid 70s. Very low dew points prevail as a cool Canadian air mass sweeps over the area. Nice breezes from the north and northwest at 5-15 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear and quite cool with temperatures dropping well down to the middle 40s in the outer ‘burbs to middle 50s in the city. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday and Friday also look nice right now with partly to mostly sunny skies as highs range through the 70s. Lows Thursday night range from the upper 40s to the upper 50s with a few clouds possible. Confidence: Medium

Saturday should continue with the nice autumn weather themes for the first official day of the new season. Highs in the 70s again. Partly cloudy with a chance of showers Saturday night and lows mainly in the 50s to the low 60s. Sunday brings another big cold front to the area with a 60% likelihood of showers and maybe isolated storms. Highs are in the 70s with that higher humidity feel before a later day cold front sweeps the area (look for a chilly Sunday evening). Confidence: Low-Medium
