Florida mauled by severe storms, tornadoes

A ferocious line of thunderstorms has raked through the central Florida peninsula today, producing damaging winds and spawning numerous tornadoes.

* 2:15 p.m. update: CNN now says the report that 70 people were trapped in a collapsed building at the Lakeland Airport was false but the airport did suffer “extensive minor damage”.

From 2:00 p.m.:

*CNN is reporting 70 people attending the Sun ‘n’ Fun aviation fair were trapped in a collapsed building at the Lakeland Regional Airport where planes were tossed around like toys by powerful winds. Tampa’s Bay News 9 is reporting several injuries at the Airport.

* At least five tornadoes were reportedaround and just to the east of Tampa . The Weather Channel indicates numerous roofs missing around Tampa Port Authority.. An 88 mph gust was recorded over Tampa Bay

* The Weather Channel also reported: Cars tuned over their sides and roof/structural damage near Largo, Fl.

* Weather Nation posted an eery photo of a shelf cloud over Cape Canaveral.

It’s the second straight day of intense thunderstorm activity in the sunshine state. Yesterday, the Associated Press reported: “...strong winds blew a Carnival cruise ship from its dock at Cape Canaveral and flipped a tractor-trailer on its side while it drove on Interstate 95 in Brevard County. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at a Titusville hospital.”
