Yesterday’s high of 93 at Reagan National broke a three-day streak of highs only in the 80s. A new streak of 90s likely continues today. But fortunately this 90s streak has a good chance of staying in the single digits, as opposed to our recent one that lasted 16 days. Meanwhile, any showers and storms today should be less widespread than yesterday, though for those hoping to fill the rain bucket a bit more, the pattern remains favorable for at least a small chance of rain each day through midweek.
Today (Sunday): Much of the day is probably dry, but a passing shower or pop-up thunderstorm is possible at any point in the day as a cold front slowly moves through. Although the sun is in and out, there should be enough to get highs to the low-to-mid 90s, with high humidity pushing afternoon heat index values to near 100-105. Confidence: Medium-High
Tonight: Any isolated storms still in the area die off or head east during the evening, and skies turn partly cloudy as we turn to night. Overnight lows range through the 70s with light winds from the west. Confidence: Medium-High
Keep reading for the forecast through midweek...
Tomorrow (Monday): Monday looks like a hot one as we see plenty of sun through at least early afternoon. Another developing wave in the atmosphere may drag through a few afternoon showers and storms (20-30% chance), but not before highs likely head into the mid-90s. The heat index should peak at least near 100 even though humidity may relent a bit in the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow night: Seems like a typical late-summer night around here with partly cloudy skies, a lingering but diminishing storm chance, and overnight lows mostly in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High
Model disagreement about the timing and placement of a few more waves in the atmosphere - and thus the timing and placement of potential showers and storms - makes the Tuesday-Wednesday forecast fairly uncertain at this point. Partly sunny skies should help highs reach the low 90s both days, and for now the shower/storm potential warrants at least a 20-30% chance each day. Confidence: Low-Medium
