FORECAST IN DETAIL

With all the heavy rain systems of the past two weeks, we really don’t need another round so soon, but the good news is that this next weather system is on the weaker side. So look for mainly light rain tonight and early tomorrow with partial clearing kicking in by afternoon. The big story then shifts to a very impressive warm-up by Thursday and Friday with a chance to even come close to high temperature records. Cooler, but not bad, weather returns by the weekend.

Snow Potential Index: 0 (→) - Snow will be the last thing on your mind when it's near 80 Friday! Unless snow chances return later, this is the last SPI of winter...

Today (Tuesday): Low pressure approaches from the Midwest and Tennessee Valley today. Mostly cloudy skies set the stage for possible mid-or late afternoon showers (40% chance). Temperatures stall in the upper 40s and low 50s. Light winds from the east. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Cloudy with rain. Precipitation should be heaviest by around midnight and into the early morning hours. But totals will probably be under a half inch. Lows in the 40s. Winds are light from the east. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Lingering morning light rain showers give way to a mixed sky, but at least warmer temperatures as low pressure pulls away. Highs sneak up into the low or even mid-60s. Winds shift and come from the west or northwest at about 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Clearing skies with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Light winds. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday begins the big warm surge with mostly sunny skies, warming winds from the southwest, and highs in the mid to upper 60s. It is but a mere appetizer for Friday! Mostly clear skies Thursday night with lows in the 40s. Confidence: Medium-High

For Friday, I’m going to go ahead and post this Nice Day icon up right now, because the weather guidance is in great agreement that this will be a banner day with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. The record high at National is 81 and I believe we have a shot at it. Friday night sees partly cloudy skies with lows in the mild low 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

The upcoming weekend will not be able to rival Friday’s weather, but it isn’t bad either. A cold front sweeps through Saturday morning and could be accompanied by a light, brief shower. Highs on Saturday should still make it to the mid-to-upper 60s with afternoon breezes and partly sunny skies. Partly cloudy skies Saturday night with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Sunday is cooler with clouds around. But highs are in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Low-Medium
