FORECAST IN DETAIL

Mother Nature not-so-gently reminds us that it’s winter today with winds gusting to 30-40 mph adding a blustery chill to highs in the 40s. True to form, of this winter at least, highs rebound to near or above 50 by Friday. Late Friday night into Saturday brings a risk of a few rain or snow showers (if there are flakes, no accumulation is expected). Then, precipitation worries take a break for New Year’s Eve before rain shower chances attempt a comeback New Year's Day.

Snow Potential Index: 1 (↑) - A few Fri night/early Sat wet flakes? Slight chance. Also, 1 model shows storm early/mid next week. Others don't.

Today (Wednesday): One of the more winter-like days we’ve had this winter, despite partly to mostly sunny skies. Highs in the low-to-mid 40s and winds gusting to around 30-40 mph make for a blustery day. Wind chills probably don’t make it out of the 30s. Hey, even in a mild winter we’re bound to a get at least a few days like today (or worse). Confidence: High

Tonight: Winds decrease this evening and become light overnight. The slackening winds, mostly clear skies and a drier air mass than we’re used to this winter are a recipe for chilly but seasonable lows - in the low-to-mid 20s in the suburbs, to the upper 20s to near 30 downtown. allow . Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): Partly sunny skies and generally light breezes from the southwest make for quite the average winter day around here. Highs in the mid-to-upper 40s aren’t too bad, especially minus today’s gusty winds. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Can’t rule out a passing rain shower (20% chance) as a weak system passes mainly to the north. Otherwise, we’re partly cloudy and not as cold with lows from near 30 to the mid-30s (suburbs to city). Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

We’ll keep a 20% chance of a passing rain shower Friday morning. By afternoon, partly sunny skies should help temperatures warm nicely, to highs from near 50 to the mid-50s. Confidence: Medium

Skies turn mostly cloudy Friday night with a chance of a few rain or snow showers overnight into Saturday morning. Any snowflakes are unlikely to stick as Friday night lows hold up in the 30s, and increasing sun helps Saturday highs to the mid-40s to low 50s. Confidence: Low-Medium

No problems for New Year’s Eve Saturday night with evening readings falling through the 40s under partly cloudy skies, before bottoming in the 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

New Year’s Day Sunday, a cold front approaches from the west but may dry up as it gets closer and moves through. So, not a very confident forecast, but for the time being we’ll call it partly sunny with a 20-30% chance of showers and highs again in the upper 40s to low 50s.. Confidence: Low-Medium
