Forecast: Columbus Day gem before rocky weather stretch

updated 9:50 a.m.: Sunshine so far today is somewhat filtered by high clouds. We’ll see some partly sunny and some mostly sunny stretches through the afternoon. The added clouds may keep highs below 80 in some spots.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

As our Columbus Day weekend draws to a close so does our five day streak of glorious weather. Tuesday won’t be terrible but clouds increase and by night, rain chances return. Wednesday may well be the week’s worst day, with rain likely. Showery conditions persist at times into Friday before probably cool and mainly dry weather for the weekend.

Today (Columbus Day): For those lucky to have the holiday, soak in this wonderful day. More splendid sunshine, with some high clouds at times, and much above normal temperatures with highs near 80. Not much of a breeze but not much humidity either. Confidence: High

Tonight: Skies are mainly clear early with the possibility of some high clouds moving in late. It’s a relatively mild evening, with lows from the low 50s in the cooler suburbs to near 60 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Keep reading for the forecast through the midweek...

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Most of the day is not all that bad. At least partial sunshine starts the day and then our long lost clouds lower and thicken as the day wears on. Rain probably holds off until dark, but I can’t rule out a few showers (30% chance). Highs remain mild, in the mid-to-upper 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Rain becomes likely (70% chance), especially after midnight as low pressure approaches from the south. Lows range from the upper 50s to low 60s (suburbs to city). Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday brings a good chance of rain (70%), especially during the morning. It may be breezy at times, with highs in the 60s. A slight chance (20%) of lingering showers Wednesday night, with lows 50-55. Confidence: Low-Medium

A broad area of slow moving low pressure moves in from the west and northwest Thursday and Friday. Both days are mostly cloudy, with a chance (40-50%) of showers at times, especially in the afternoon hours. Highs Thursday are 70-75 and near 70 Friday. Lows Friday morning are 55-60. Confidence:Medium

Low pressure should scoot far enough to our north to allow for some partial clearing over the weekend, but it's not a sure thing. At this point, it looks to be partly sunny Saturday and mostly sunny Sunday, with high in the 60s and lows in the 40s. However, there’s a small chance the low pressure system hangs back and keeps us cloudy, so keep checking the forecast. Confidence:Low-Medium
