FORECAST IN DETAIL

Fall-like weather gradually fades during the first part of the week as the air turns warmer and more humid. With the muggier, summer-like conditions, we add the chance of showers and thunderstorms, particularly Tuesday and Thursday. Fittingly, a cold front passes by just prior to Friday’s fall equinox, when cooler, crisper air starts to arrive.

Today (Monday): We’re stuck in a mostly cloudy pattern for another day, but as winds shift from the east (at 5-10 mph) to more out of the south, it’s slightly warmer. Highs reach the low 70s with maybe a few mid-70s , especially in the southern suburbs. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: With cloudy skies and southerly flow, it’s a fairly mild evening. Lows only drop to near 60 downtown with mid-50s in the colder suburbs. Late at night (mainly after midnight), we could (20-30% chance) see a few showers as a weak wave of low pressure approaches. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It sort of feels like summer again. Southerly flow pushes up warm, humid air, and, despite more clouds than sun, we climb up into the upper 70s to perhaps 80 south of town. Showers and thunderstorms are possible, with the best - though still somewhat low - odds (30%) in the afternoon and evening. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Shower and thunderstorm chances wane during the evening, then it’s mostly cloudy and mild. Lows range from the mid-60s downtown to near 60 in the cooler suburbs. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

For warm weather fans, Wednesday may be the pick of the week. We’ll probably have more sunshine than either Monday or Tuesday, and, with southerly flow, the highest temperatures. We make a run at the low 80s. Afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorm chances are low, at just about 20%. Wednesday night is balmy, with lows 62-68 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Medium

We may hit 80 again on Thursday, but a cold front probably gives us our best (50-60%) chance of showers and storms of the week, especially in the afternoon and evening. Depending on the exact timing of the front, showers could linger late into Thursday night, or, skies may gradually clear. I’m going to lean with a slower cold front passage - keeping shower chances in the picture later and holding temperatures up a bit, with lows 60-65 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Low-Medium

The cold front should be in our rearview mirror by midday Friday, at the latest. So any morning showers taper off, and it becomes partly sunny and breezy. Highs are probably 70-75. Becoming clear and cool Friday night, with lows near 50 in the cooler suburbs with upper 50s downtown. Confidence: Low-Medium

The early read on the weekend is very promising as a high pressure builds into the area from the northwest. That means plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Highs each day are likely in the low 70s, with lows from the mid-40s in the cooler suburbs to the mid-50s downtown. Confidence:Medium
