FORECAST IN DETAIL

The season’s first heat wave fires up today and lasts through Wednesday. The combination of heat and humidity is most oppressive Tuesday. Thunderstorms may break the heat wave late Wednesday. By Thursday, some cooler and drier air filter in to region although there are some indications heat may re-emerge by late next weekend.

Today (Monday): It’s a great day if you’re near the pool or beach. But if you don’t have a way to cool off, it’s not much fun. High temperateratures range from 89-94, but the humidity (dew points near 70) make it feel like 95-99 at times. A light wind from the west around 5 mph offers little relief. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Not much relief. Humidity levels stagnate at uncomfortable levels and overnight lows only range from near 70 in the cooler suburbs to the mid-70s downtown. Overnight lows may be the warmest on record (past records: 74 DCA, 67 IAD, 72 BWI) Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Back to work and you may need to take a shower by the time you get there. Temperatures hastily rise through 80s reaching the mid-90s or so by mid-to-late afternoon. With the humidity, it will feel close to 100. The record high of 99 at DCA (from 1991) may be tough to match, but Dulles’ and BWI’s 94 and 96 are in play. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Another steamy night with low temperatures near or above the warmest on record. Lows range from 70-75 (suburbs-city). Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday is hot and humid once again, with highs in the low-to-mid 90s. A cold front moving through late may spark some thunderstorms (50-60 percent chance) which break the heat. Overnight lows drop back into the 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday through Saturday are partly to mostly sunny and cooler, with highs generally in the 80s. However, with a lingering stalled frontal boundary in our vicinity, an afternoon/evening shower or thunderstorm isn’t completely out of the question (20-30% chance) any day. Overnights are partly cloudy and pleasant, with lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Hot and humid weather may return for next Sunday, with highs near 90. Confidence: Low-Medium
