FORECAST IN DETAIL

After our unusual (for this year!) cool spell, a warmer weather pattern is arriving in the area for a visit. Unfortunately, forecast details over the next several days are a bit complicated, but the general view is that we’ll see temperatures into the 70s and 80s with occasional shower and thunderstorm chances. Cooling trends return later this weekend with a cooler pattern favored by next week again.

Today (Tuesday): Showers and isolated thunderstorms this morning are resulting from the passage of a weak frontal system tied to low pressure passing to our north. The showers and associated cloud cover should mostly clear out toward midday with partly sunny skies this afternoon and temperatures pushing up into the upper 70s and low 80s (offering up the warmest day since Apr 21). Still a 20% chance of an afternoon shower/t’shower. Winds from the west at 10-15 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Partly cloudy skies and warmer with lows ranging from the middle 50s in the outer suburbs to low 60s in the city. Light winds from the west in the evening shifting to coming from the north late at night. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly sunny skies with a 30% chance of late afternoon or early evening showers/t’storms. Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Light winds from the north (from high pressure over the Northeast) could keep our temperatures slightly cooler than Tuesday’s levels. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Scattered showers (30% chance) under partly to mostly cloudy skies and lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Light winds. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday is trending in the trickier direction as some weather models hint at some cooler onshore flow (i.e. from the ocean), while others favor the warm push strengthening. For now, we keep the forecast consistent with low-to-mid 80s, but if this forecast fails, the correct answer could be mid-to-upper 70s instead. Skies are partly sunny with a 30% risk of a late afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Partly cloudy Thursday night with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Low-Medium

Friday still promises to be our warmest day of the week with more robust flow from the west and southwest pushing temperatures into the middle to upper 80s. Partly-to-mostly sunny skies also help, but we maintain a 20% risk of showers/storms, especially in the afternoon. Partly cloudy and warm Friday night with lows in the low-to-mid 60s. Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend forecast is also tricky, but it looks like a warm day on Saturday with highs in the 80s, partly sunny skies, and a 30% chance of afternoon/evening showers/storms. Saturday night should be on the warm side again with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. As a cool front edges into the area, look for highs in the 70s Sunday with an increased chance for showers (40% risk) and cloudier skies. Confidence: Low
