FORECAST IN DETAIL

Yesterday’s clouds were all bark and no bite with no beneficial rains delivered. Today is a different story as a slow-moving cold front finally pushes plenty of precipitation into the area by this afternoon. Shower chances continue Tuesday night into Wednesday with drier and slightly cooler weather Thursday and Friday. High pressure rewards our Mother’s Day weekend with sunshine and warmer- but not hot- temperatures.

Today (Tuesday): Today’s precipitation presentation commences mainly this afternoon. While we have a 20% risk of showers before noon, the morning is mostly dominated by clouds and gradually warming temperatures. By mid-to-late afternoon, showers and some storms are likely (60%) with temperatures reaching up to around the middle 70s. Winds from the south range from 10-15 mph. As of now, it seems like the chances for the heaviest rain totals (.25” or higher) are north and west of the city with mainly .1 to .25” elsewhere. Confidence: Medium

What’s This?

Tonight: As the cold front gradually shifts through the area, expect more showers and storms into the evening hours and occasionally overnight (60% likelihood again). Cloudy skies with lows from the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds from the south at 10-15 mph shift to come from the southwest with similar speeds toward dawn. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): The sluggish cold front combined with some upper level energy trigger more scattered showers (60% chance) today, but they should mainly be of the light variety. Heaviest rains should be east of the Bay. Cloudy skies with highs in the upper 60s to middle 70s along with light breezes that are variable at times. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: A 30% chance of scattered evening showers, but otherwise, partly to mostly cloudy skies with lows in the low-to-mid 50s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday and Friday feature a return to sunshine with temperatures near to slightly cooler-than-normal. Friday is probably sunnier than Thursday, but both days should see more sun than clouds. Highs are expected to range mainly in the low 70s with lows under mostly clear skies Thursday and Friday nights in the mid 40s in the outer suburbs to the low 50s in the city. Confidence: Medium

Mother’s Day Weekend looks excellent right now. Mostly sunny skies with very comfortable temperatures ranging up through the 70s. Lows are mainly in the 50s Saturday night with mostly clear skies too. The one risk to the forecast is that a weather system aiming for a Monday arrival comes just a bit faster. That could deliver some increasing clouds Sunday afternoon or evening. I’d peg that as a low risk right now, though, with a nice weekend favored overall. Confidence: Low-Medium
