Forecast: Not bad for Mom’s day, even with a spotty shower for some

9 a.m. update: Skies already turning at least partly sunny around the area. After the early-to-mid morning showers that have mainly stayed west and south of the Beltway, it’s just an isolated shower chance from here on out.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

Happy Mother’s Day Mom! (to my Mom and every Mom!). Despite a cloudier start than yesterday and a chance for a few light showers, highs near or a bit past 70 and eventually some sun should be good enough to salvage the day for all the moms out there. As we head into the work week, a weak but resilient ridge of high pressure favors sunnier skies and beautiful highs in the 70s with only the slightest chance of a shower.

Today (Mother’s Day): Spotty light showers tracking from the west/northwest are possible (40% chance west/south of town, 20% north/east) through early-to-mid afternoon, with chances decreasing thereafter. Mostly cloudy morning skies may turn at least partly sunny by mid-to-late afternoon with pleasant highs near 70 to the low 70s. Winds from the north-northwest are light. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Clearing skies during the evening into overnight and light or calm winds lead to fairly cool lows, in the mid-40s to near 50 for the suburbs and probably low 50s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Monday): A tentative “Nice Day” stamp is in order as a little ridge of higher pressure looks to protect us from a retrograding area of low pressure off the New England coast. This should leave us with mostly sunny skies and nice highs in the low-to-mid 70s. Winds from the north are mainly light, perhaps becoming a little breezy in the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Looks like we’re in for a tranquil night. Expect partly to mostly clear skies and lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

On Tuesday and Wednesday, high pressure probably hangs on enough to ward off active weather to our west, south, and off the coast. Here in the “Goldilocks” zone, if you will, we’re likely to see at least partly sunny skies with shower chances on the slim side, highs in the 70s, and Tuesday night lows in the low-to-mid 50s. Confidence: Medium
