FORECAST IN DETAIL

Thank goodness we’re in the homestretch of what’s gotta be one of the gloomiest Septembers of all time. Mother Nature has been super stingy with the sun for nearly a month now and doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to clear out the clouds. We’re not done with those pesky shower chances either. Soon enough, though, high pressure will come to the rescue with sunny skies and low humidity, but also much cooler temperatures. Question is, will it be in time to salvage any sun for the weekend?

Today (Wednesday): We’re having the usual, whether we like it or not. An upper-level area of low pressure continues to sit over the Midwest, as it has for so many days now. For us, that means some areas of morning fog and/or mist, mostly cloudy skies and probably scattered showers, with a 60% chance of seeing rain at any given location. Maybe a few t’storms around too, especially in the afternoon. Highs reach the familiar upper 70s to near 80 and humidity remains high. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: As a cold front closes in from the west, shower chances stick around tonight with an evening t’storm possible as well. I’d put the overall odds of rain around 40%. Needless to say, skies are mostly cloudy with lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): The cold front probably passes through early, but lingers close enough to our east for a continued 30-40% chance of showers, even as winds become from the west and blow in drier air. Highs reach the mid-to-upper 70s under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: After a 30-40% chance of evening showers, skies go partly cloudy overnight as shower chances decrease to 20% or less. Temperatures cool nicely amidst increasingly drier air, with lows down to the mid-50s to near 60. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

I wouldn’t rule out an isolated shower on Friday. But the main story is low humidity, partly sunny skies, increasing winds from the west, and refreshing highs in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium

The weekend brings even cooler air, and it should be quite be breezy, too. Saturday, as the upper-level low finally moves overhead on its way out to sea, we may take a small step back with partly to mostly cloudy skies and the chance of an isolated shower or two. Sunday is sunnier, possibly mostly sunny. Highs both days rise only to near 60, with Saturday night lows in the chilly mid-40s to near 50. Confidence: Medium
