Forecast: Shower chances into Friday, then sunning up for weekend

8:20 a.m. update: The models and radar continue to indicate, even more so than before, that today’s rain will focus on areas west of D.C. In fact, showers may be limited for much of the day until you get into the far western suburbs and toward the mountains, though shower chances should increase in the immediate metro area during the afternoon into evening.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

If it’s gotta rain, better it do so during the work week than the weekend. Today and late Thursday into Friday present the best chance of showers over the next few days, though pinpointing the timing and location of the most consistent and heaviest rain is tricky. It does look like we clear out nicely for the weekend, which should be a pretty good one despite some significant breezes.

Today (Wednesday): Showers are likely throughout the metro area, with the heaviest and most consistent rain probably setting up west of town. With cloudy skies and onshore breezes from the east/northeast, highs probably can’t do better than the mid-60s. Not the nicest of days. But no complainin’ after our recent string of perfection, ok?. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Shower chances gradually decrease this evening into the overnight. With all the moisture around, areas of fog are likely with lows in the mid-50s to near 60. How about Wednesday-Wednesday night rain totals? Much of the immediate metro area may have trouble reaching or getting much past a half-inch, whereas the far western suburbs and especially toward the mountains could see 1-2”+. Confidence: Medium

Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend...

Tomorrow (Thursday): An upper-level area of low pressure keeps us mostly cloudy with still a 30% chance of occasional showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm. Temperatures warm a bit from today to highs near 70 to the mid-70s. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tomorrow night: Shower chances continue around 30% through evening, then bump up to around 40-50% overnight or toward morning as a cold front approaches. It’s another cloudy and potentially foggy night as lows bottom in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Low-Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

The way it looks now, I think we’re still stuck with a 50% chance of rain on Friday under mostly to partly cloudy skies. Also, watch for winds to pick up as the day goes on and highs reach near 70 to the mid-70s. Confidence: Low-Medium

A perfect weekend? Not quite. But not too shabby, either, as high pressure returns. We’re fairly breezy throughout, with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s Saturday, followed by partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the low-to-mid 70s Sunday. Upper 40s to low 50s should be the range for Saturday night lows Confidence: Medium-High
