Forecast: Salvageable Sunday despite shower chance; next heat wave looms for midweek

9:50 a.m. update: Cloud cover stays pretty solid through morning, with still some breaks of sun possible in the afternoon. At this point it looks like much or most of the day is rain-free (good news for those partaking in Post Hunt!). If we do see any showers/storms develop, they’re probably isolated and during the late afternoon into evening.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

I’m still holding out hope that we can sneak out some semblance of a nice day today. However, a cold front draped across the area, and not really moving much, keeps the possibility of an occasional shower or storm in play. Today’s more humid regime gives way to pleasantly drier air tomorrow, before we watch highs build back to the mid-90s by midweek.

Today (Sunday): Any showers or storms in the area around sunrise should head south fairy quickly, and a good portion or portions of the day should be dry. But a weak cold front hanging around does mean we keep a 30-40% chance of isolated to scattered showers/storms for the remainder of the day. It’s a more humid day and temps are a bit tricky with the front and variable clouds, but I think at least low 80s is a safe bet, with upper 80s possible with enough sun. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Skies begin to clear as winds turn to come from the north bringing in slightly drier air. Overnight lows get into the low-to-mid-60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Keep reading for the forecast through midweek...

Tomorrow (Monday): High pressure means a mostly sunny day with less humidity (dew points probably in the 50s). Temperatures warm nicely to the low-to-mid 80s. Right now even an isolated shower or storm seems unlikely. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: We see clear skies continue into the overnight. Winds shift to come from the south, foreshadowing the return of warmer and more humid conditions. But with the humidity not quite there yet, we cool off nicely as overnight lows dip to the low-to-mid-60s, maybe some upper 50s in the suburbs. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Here comes another heat wave. The heat and humidity begin to ramp back up Tuesday with highs in the upper 80s to near 90, and then kick into high gear Wednesday and Thursday with highs likely well into the 90s. Skies should be partly to mostly sunny through the period, with daily chances of a passing shower or storm only around 20%. Confidence: Medium
