FORECAST IN DETAIL

Our weather is on “fast-forward” right now with lots of day-to-day changes ahead. A cold front is planning an afternoon to early evening arrival. Its entourage includes clouds and scattered thunderstorms - some may be severe. Some cooler and much less humid weather follows the front Wednesday before yet another front - this time a warm (or shall we say “hot”) front - lifts north through the area early Thursday. Very hot weather Thursday should fade in the wake of another cool front on Friday leading to a near seasonal weekend with perhaps more Saturday storms.

Today (Tuesday): Partly sunny skies this morning and then partly to mostly cloudy skies this afternoon could keep us near or below 90 yet again today. For now, the cautious call is for highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with muggy conditions too. Scattered thunderstorms this afternoon have a 40-50% chance of affecting you. Some may be severe, but the latest thinking favors southern Virginia vs. our immediate area. Winds from the southwest at 5-10 mph shift to coming from the west and northwest at 10-15 mph by afternoon into the evening. Confidence: Medium

What is the Storm Threat Level?

Tonight: A 30-40% chance of evening thunderstorms leads the way to partly cloudy skies overnight with falling temperatures AND falling humidity levels. Temperatures might actually feel somewhat pleasant again toward morning as lows drop to the low 60s in the outer suburbs to near 70 or maybe cooler in the city. Winds are mostly from the cooler/drier north at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly to mostly sunny skies with considerably lower humidity highlights our Wednesday as high temperatures only manage the mid-to-upper 80s. Winds are light. And did I mention the very low dew points? I'm not sure I can over-emphasize how much nicer tomorrow feels! Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy with lows in the mid 60s in the outer suburbs to low 70s in the city. A warm front approaches toward dawn, which brings humidity up higher and also offers a 30% threat for early morning showers and storms. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday is aiming to be “Torch Day” as the hottest weather of the week surges through the area. Partly to mostly sunny skies only add fuel to temperatures expected to surge into the mid-to-upper 90s. I would not be surprised to see a few 100-degree high temperatures yet again. And we only have a 20% risk of an afternoon/evening storm to squelch the heat. Humidity should be back up to at least moderate levels of discomfort. Very muggy conditions on Thursday night with lows in the 70s and maybe only around 80 in the city. Confidence: Medium

Friday finds another cold front pushing into the area most likely by afternoon. Timing is tricky and could affect how hot our temperatures get. For now, let’s hold to low-to-mid 90s with partly sunny skies in the morning and partly to mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon. We should spend less time at high temperatures at least due to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms (40% risk). This cool front is not as strong as the earlier week deal, so we don't drop the humidity as strongly. Look for partly cloudy skies at night with lows in the 70s and only slightly lower humidity. Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend may find that front hung up around our area with lingering clouds and thunderstorm risks on Saturday into Saturday night (40% risk at least for now). Highs Saturday with partly cloudy skies should be in the mid-upper 80s with lows Saturday night in the mid 60s to low 70s. Sunday is trending drier and cooler with low dew points and highs in the 80s again. Not too bad. Confidence: Low
